Effective communication within a unit leads to faster resolution of issues

The Office of the Military Ombudsman has received nearly 2,500 complaints since 27 January, when it officially began its work. We are grateful for this trust and, despite the significant workload, are doing everything possible to review each complaint as quickly as possible.

During the review of complaints, we identified a number of cases where servicemembers contacted the Office of the Military Ombudsman directly, while their commanders were not aware of the issue. Once informed, the problem was resolved promptly.

Therefore, in situations where it is possible and does not pose a risk, we recommend that servicemembers first inform their commander about the issue. In many cases, this is the fastest way to resolve the problem and can save you time. At the same time, it allows the team of the Military Ombudsman to optimise its work and focus efforts on cases that cannot be resolved without the Office’s intervention.

At the same time, the team of the Office is always ready to assist if commanders fail to respond to your complaints or engage in unlawful actions. We also urge you to inform us immediately of any violations of your rights that pose a threat to your life or health.

We would also like to address commanders. We understand the heavy workload you face, but above all, your people are your greatest value. Talk to your subordinates, pay attention to their concerns, and do not allow situations to escalate to the point where the Military Ombudsman’s intervention becomes necessary. The best unit is the one the Military Ombudsman does not need to visit.
